‘Putting students at the heart of everything it does’, every young person in our care is known as an individual (Ofsted January 2010). Trentham High School is a mixed, non-denominational school situated on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent. The school was awarded Specialist Science Status and Healthy Schools Award (September 2009); becoming a Foundation School and then a Co-operative Trust in April 1st 2010. This ‘change in status’ helps us to continue to build strong links with our community and become a truly member driven organisation; preserving and developing our ethos for future generations. Our ‘co-operative’ members are the community: parents, staff, students, governors, local organisations and businesses. The Trustees of our school include Newcastle-under-Lyme College, the Co-operative College and Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form. We believe that Co-operative Trust status will develop our already successful school.’

Specialism Update July 2010
Our first Trentham Lecture took place this month. This was given by Dr John Wilson (pictured below) from Birmingham University. The subject matter was a challenging one relating to particle physics & what actually goes on inside the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. He also demonstrated how to detect the particles hitting the Earth from the destruction of distant stars using a Spark Chamber. Dr Wilson is part of a team researching at CERN on the ATLAS project & was part of a Nobel Prize winning team in his earlier career.
100 students from 4 local High Schools attended. The pupils selected are the ones who have chosen to study Triple Science courses at GCSE. This fits in with our vision of becoming a centre of excellence for science in the local area. We aim to raise the aspirations of pupils we hope that through meeting with working scientists they will see studying science at University in the future.
We also ran an evening lecture for our local community. The audience included governors, teachers, parents & local residents.
We will be continuing our lecture program in the new academic year.

Director of Specialism.
Careers update “The Media Challenge”
We are pleased to announce that selected year 9 pupils breezed through the preliminary rounds of The Media Challenge in order to get through to the Final Stage which took place on the 2nd of July at Staffordshire Fire Headquarters.
This particular competition enables students to raise aspirations while experiencing different careers linked to journalism, but also to work as part of a team in highly competitive situations.
The final involved team briefings, press conferences and a staged major incident. The whole day was very exciting and each school was judged on 4 different categories. The first three categories were to produce a video news report, a radio news report and a newspaper front cover. The final
category was awarded to the best overall journalists of the day.
Unfortunately this year we didn’t win any of the categories but were highly commended for questioning and video editing skills. Each member of the team did a fantastic job on the day and received a certificate and a medal for gaining a place in the final. A big well done to Angelena, Daniel, Elise, Hazel, Kieran and Sam.

Specialism Update – June 2010
Pupils from 9X2 & 9Y2 have recently taken part in a science enrichment activity entitled the SMART Materials project. This has involved them being given a challenge by some staff from the construction company Balfour Beatty. The pupils were asked to work out a way of producing 10% of the energy that the school requires by using sustainable technology. This activity involved pupils using actual data relating to the amount of energy produced and the cost of the different technologies, and then plan where to situate this technology around the school.
Different teams of pupils were then asked to present their ideas to the Mr Colin Harper and Mrs C Nurrish from Balfour Beatty.
Pupils and staff then used voting pads to decide which presentations were the best.
The best teams will be asked to present their ideas in a city wide event in July. The results will be announced soon.
Well done to all the staff & pupils involved in this activity.

Specialism Update May 2010
Our F24 racing team took part in the Darley Moor testing day on the 24th of May.
This event allowed us to test some of the modifications that Mr Knight & some of the pupils have made to our F24 car.
Pupils who took part in the test day were; Talitha (Y10), Jacob (Y10), Sarah (Y8), Chelsea (Y8), Jack (Y8), Harrison (Y8) & Paul (Y8). The pupils posted some excellent times and we hope to take the F24 car to the Midlands Regional Heat at Mallory Park in Leicester in July.
The aim of GreenPower is to advance education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology to young people.
This sort of activity fits in with the ethos behind our Science specialism to engage pupils in Science Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) related subjects with a view to allow them to see the applications of science. We hope that this will encourage more of our pupils to engage in STEM related careers in the future.
Thanks to the staff, pupils and parents who supported this event.

This project has enabled pupils to make links between their science knowledge and investigative skills to help them find out about the reasons for using different materials for food packaging. The project has involved the pupils using new resources that have been purchased recently using the extra money that comes with Science Specialist status. This equipment included mini-laptops & data logging technology. Mr Cartwright / Miss Hully
