Introduction

‘Putting students at the heart of everything it does’, every young person in our care is known as an individual (Ofsted January 2010). Trentham High School is a mixed, non-denominational school situated on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent. The school was awarded Specialist Science Status and Healthy Schools Award (September 2009); becoming a Foundation School and then a Co-operative Trust in April 1st 2010. This ‘change in status’ helps us to continue to build strong links with our community and become a truly member driven organisation; preserving and developing our ethos for future generations. Our ‘co-operative’ members are the community: parents, staff, students, governors, local organisations and businesses. The Trustees of our school include Newcastle-under-Lyme College, the Co-operative College and Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form. We believe that Co-operative Trust status will develop our already successful school.’

iPad French lesson makes a hit at iTrentham

Screen shot 2012-05-17 at 16.29.08Here at Trentham School we have already begun using iPads in lessons to allow students to reap the benefits of touch device technology. In a traditional lesson students would go on a trip, or look at books to imagine their surroundings for practising French Vocabulary. However today we used an app called ‘Tourwrist’ to place the students inside a 3D location photograph that they could take screenshots of. We then used ‘iMovie’ to narrate in French what we were seeing in the slideshow.

The finished results are available to watch here. Please remember we did this in an hour of school time and many of the students had never used an iPad before. I think the students did amazingly well at this task as the vocabulary was new to them. There was a tremendous excited buzz at the end of the lesson where we got the students to introduce their own work and showed each project on the projector.

UPDATED – iPad Launch Video

iPad launch event We are still looking for support for our iPad scheme to enable every child in the school to have equal access to personalised learning. There will be another opportunity to come into school and ask questions on Wednesday and Thursday this week, as detailed in a letter from the school. It is very important that we reach the required donation level, as unless we do the scheme can’t run. If the suggested donation seems expensive it is important to speak to us and donate what you can.

For anyone who missed the actual launch event, a short video is now available to explain why we believe this scheme to be the best possible opportunity for our students to embrace future technology. The eLearning Foundation scheme is the only way we can do this whole school, as it guarantees access to 24 / 7  learning for all students. The video has been updated now to show actual project work completed by the students.

iPad 1:1 launch still needs support

iTrentham School The iPad launch event last night was a great success, with students showing off the work they had been producing earlier in the day.

We still need parental support for the scheme so contact the school for information if you were unable to attend the night.

Any parents questioning iPad 1:1 only need to look at Essa Academy, who went from 55% to 100% 5+ A-C grades in just 2 years. http://essaacademy.org

For any Twitter users out there the school now has a Twitter account. Follow iTrentham on Twitter and you will be kept up to date with how the project is going and see finished pieces of digital work.
